Heal the world

고등학생 시절 나는,
공부를 잘하거나 많이 하는 학생은 아니었지만 

남들보다 뒤떨어지고 싶지 않은 자존심에

2주마다 우편으로 날아오는 학습지를 받아보았다.
하지만, 학습지라는게 자유의지로 공부하는 매체였기에

졸업즈음 그 학습지들은 아주 깨끗한 재활용 종이가 되어버렸다.

비록

격주로 오던 그 학습지들은 차곡차곡 깨끗하게 쌓여만 갔었지만, 

그 안에서도 종종 즐겨보던 챕터가 있었는데,
영화의 명대사를 통한 영어독해와 

POP의 가사를 통해 배우는 영어듣기 챕터가 그것이었다.

그때의 POP 중 두곡 정도가 기억에 남는다.
Abba의 Dancing Queen,
그리고 오늘 특히 생각나는 Michael Jackson의 Heal The World.
분명 훨씬 많은 곡들이 소개되었던 것 같기는하다만...
이 두곡을 제외하면 소위말하는 나에게는 명곡이 아니었기에, 

(혹은 Pop에 대한 음악적 경험이 많지 않았기에)
깨끗하게 쌓여버린 학습지 더미속에 묻혀버렸을 것이다.

중학생때였나,
Dangerous 앨범이 발매되고, 

반에서 소위 팝을 좀 안다는 친구가 마이클 잭슨 노래는 무조건 사서 들어야 한다며 찬양을 할때,
나는 그친구에게 이런말을 하였다.
"흑인이 백인되려고 수술하고 피부색 바꾼 사람이 뭐가 좋노!
그런 사람이라면 난 굳이 노래를 들어가며 찬양하진 않을란다!"
이에 그친구는 실망한 눈빛으로 나에게 별다른 대꾸를 하지 않았다.


몇년 후,
그렇게 반감만 있던 마이클 잭슨을 학습지에서 다시 보게되었다.

첫 멜로디를 들었을 때, 그 감흥은 아직도 잊혀지지 않는다.
'와......'
'이런 노래도 있구나...'
온몸에 소름이 돋을 정도로 놀라웠다.
그리고 알게되었다. 

나의 편견. 잘못되었다는 것을...
무언가를 함부로 평가하거나 말하지 말아야겠다는 것을...
그리고 그 친구에게 사과하고 싶다는 것을...


신세계였다.
테이프를 거의 무한반복으로 듣고 또 들었고,
가사를 외우고자 따라부르고
발음나는대로 한글로 써서도 불러보고,
후렴부가 몇번 반복되면서, 언제 가사가 바뀌고... 등등
최고였고, Pop에대해 관심을 갖게 되었고, 잭슨의 팬이 되었다.

나라는 혼란스럽고 머릿속은 복잡하다.
나만 잘살면 되는 것일까
언제부터 우리는 '정의'를 이야기하면, '비웃음'이 되는 세상에 살게되었을까
상식이 통하는 사회는 될 수 있을까.
딸아이에게 과연 아름다운 미래를 선물할 수 있을까
아니 따뜻한 삶을 딸에게 만들어 주고는 있는 것일까


마이클 잭슨은
어릴때부터 노래를 부르며 연예인으로 키워져서
개인적인 추억과 어린시절에 대한 동경이 있었다고 한다.
그래서 Childhood 라는 곡도 만들었고
집안에 놀이동산도 만들정도로 어린시절 자신이 가져보지 못한 세상을 동경하였다.

비록 세상 모든 것을 가진 슈퍼스타였지만, 

그 내면에는 따스한 관심과 사랑을 갈구하는 순수한 아이가 있었을 것이다.
(Childhood는 가사가 슬프지만, 이곡에 대한 사연과 내용은 생략하기로 한다.)

철없고 편협했던 나의 지난 생각들

오만과 자만을 친절한척 포장했던 나의 행동들

상처주는 것에 무감각했던 지난 나의 모습들

사회 곳곳에 뿌리내린 기회주의적 모순들

할수만 있다면,

치유하고 싶다.
